The Union Cabinet has approved the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore to build a complete chip-manufacturing ecosystem — fabrication plants, display fabs, packaging units and design startups.
Under the mission, the government will extend fiscal support of up to 50% of project cost for semiconductor fabs. Tata Electronics and Micron have announced facilities in Dholera (Gujarat) and Sanand, with an ATMP unit in Assam.
Officials said the mission is central to reducing import dependence on chips — a market India currently imports almost entirely — and to positioning India in global supply chains being reshaped by US-China tech tensions.
